The United States Senate has confirmed the appointment of Car roll D. Wright, of Massachusetts to be Commissioner of Labor. We understood, while at Liberty, yesteiday that a Mrs. Fruit ot that town was dying. Her infant, two days old, died last Sabbath. Cards are out for the marriage of Miss Lizzie F. Brown to Mr. Robert Ken non Moss, both of Danville, Va., to occur on Wednesday morning, Feb. 27th, at 10 o'clock, 402 Wilson street. 'Trinity College An adiourned meeting of our citizens to consider the question of removing. Trinity College to. this place will be held in the Court House next Monday night The question is one of much tmpoi tance both to :- the College ; and to Greensboro, and the meeting should be well atfer. The Kernersville News mentions a Neck Tie Party." In old times people considered that necks were too short to tie. The bill to promote the efficiency of the State Guard passed its third reading in the lower branch of the Legislature yesterday by a close vote Kl to 4S. The discussion of the Railroad Commission was set for ii o'clock, a m., today. A pitched battie between a num ber of negroes and a band ot illicit distillers ia reported from the moun tains of Chcokes County, in which two white men and a negra were killed and six negroes were wounded, including two women. Our young friend John B. Fariss returned last night from Raleigh, where he underwent ex amination before the Nwth Caro lina Board of Pharmacy, and was entirely successful, being approved by the Board, and is now fully licensed. There will be a meeting at Belle Vue Institute on to morrow, (Friday ) evening at 7 : 30 o'clock (or the pur -pose' of consultation in regard to the introduction of a bill an the Legisla ture allowing tax-payers in consoli dated school district No. 4. to levy a special tax to raise a school fund for said district. The amount ot local news is not considerable. It wtuld uk vry active imagination to conjure up news where there is hone. Still, there is always something turning up. We are sure of one thing that there has been more turning up of the soil on South Elm S.reet in this city than was ever known before. The Wilmington Star has found in the Buffalo, (N. Y.) On account of the small attendance at the regular meeting for piactice Monday night, and as there is an important reason for a full r hersal this ' week, a meeting will be held at the College, Friday .evening Feb. 15, at half past 7 o'clock. A full attendance isrequested as only urgent necessity would induce the call of an extra meeting. Walter Power Sullivan, Musical Director. Mr, Walter Curtis, who is a stu dent at Chapel Hill, came up Wed nesday night and went over to his home at Franklinsville yesferday 00 a visit to his mother. Mr. Curtis tells us that among the students at the University there are five young men, at least, who purpose entering the foreign mission field, either as educa tors or preachers. The Empire of Japan, especiallly, offers a very tempt ing field in the tense that teachers are gladly welcomed and encouraged by the authorities of the Empire. A Tiiiek Cattukkd While the family of Dr. Griffith were at their morning meal yesterday a thief, who turned out to be a c !.,ired tramp na mod John Henry (HIlis, entered the house and carried oil' an overcoat belonging to the Doctor. Policeman Weatherly getting wind of the f flair pursued the thief, who went in a northerly direction. He was over, taken at McKnights Crossing, four miles from town, on the Richmond and Danville Railroad- "John Henry" on seeing his pursuer lett the main track and ran' for life, but policeman Weatherly sprang from his dog cart and gave chase, capturing "John Henry," who had on the stolen coat. The next thing was to bring the thief back to town and put him in a place where overcoats are not much worn. "John Henry" hails from Atlanta. nancy Fund.
